Extended Deadline: 14 July 2019
21-25 October 2019 | Querétaro, Mexico
Description
ICFO-UNAM International Schools on the Frontiers of Light is a series of schools organized by ICFO - The Institute for Photonic Sciences (SPAIN) and CFATA-UNAM – the Centre for Applied Physics and Advanced Technology of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (MEXICO). The School aims to inspire the next generation of researchers in light sciences and related technologies.
The first edition will be devoted to BIOPHOTONICS and will be held in Querétaro, Mexico.
The school will feature experts from ICFO and UNAM, and leading international researchers, in an intensive 1-week course directed to young students wishing to enter the vibrant field of Biophotonics.
Topics covered will include:
Fluorescence Imaging: FRET, Confocal, Nonlinear, LSFM.
Super resolution imaging: STED, STORM, SIM, FCS, Single particle.
Biomedical applications: biosensors, OPT, DCS, Photoacustics.
Advanced Bio-applications: Optical tweezers, optogenetics, mechanosensing, neurophotonics.
Nano-bio-photonics: nanoparticle-based biosensors
Nonlinear Quantum Biophotonics: Multidimensional spectroscopy with quantum light.
Participants will gain a strong understanding of basic concepts, an introduction to the current state of the art in these topics, and have the opportunity to mingle with top scientists from leading institutions.
Lecturers
Turgut Durduran, ICFO, Barcelona
María García-Parajo, ICFO, Barcelona
Michael Krieg, ICFO, Barcelona
Stefan Wieser, ICFO, Barcelona
Pablo Loza, ICFO, Barcelona
Roberto León-Montiel, Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares, UNAM
Remy Avila, Centro de Física Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada, UNAM
Ataúlfo Martínez, Instituto de Neurobiología, UNAM
Christopher Wood, Instituto de Biotecnología, UNAM
Location
The School will be hosted by the Centro de Física Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada (CFATA) which is one of the 9 research centers of the the Juriquilla Campus of UNAM.
Lectures and talks will take place in the Laboratorio Nacional de Visualización Científica Avanzada (LAVIS), in a comfortable auditorium equipped with a 6x4 array of 55-inches high-resolution screens.
At CFATA Coffee-breaks and lunches will be served and poster sessions will also take place.
Juriquilla is a nice residential and academic suburb of Querétaro city, only 15 kms apart from down town. Queretaro city center is where the Mexican independence movement began. It is a beautiful colonial city, very lively, safe and pleasant to walk.
Participants will be hosted in hotels located in the city center. Back and forth daily transportation to Juriquilla will be arranged in buses provided by the school.
Participants
Students should have a strong interest and commitment to start their research careers in a biophotonics-related field. We encourage application from bachelor and masters students wishing to start a master or PhD degree but PhD students and young postdocs are also welcome.
Fellowships
A limited number of international travel fellowships are available to help students attend the school, through generous support form the OSA.
ICFO will offer up to two Student Research Fellowships to advanced undergraduate or masters students accepted into the school to undertake 3-6 month research project at ICFO, Barcelona following the school.
